about

There is so much I love about this piece. Aspects of it are actually more than a decade-old. But during a resident at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Jan 2020, I re-visited the theme and developed it into what you hear. The title derives from the rhythm cycle of 30 beats (a kind of 30/8); it was often -32 C at Banff in January (which results in a nice ice beard!), and my studio was hut #25.

There is a whole lot of West Africa in this, in aesthetic and texture, but with alterations. The main bell pattern you hear at the top is actually a 2+2+3+3 (=10) structure that plays throughout. However, its complete period is actually 3 of those (total 30). This long bell pattern idea is common in the music of Benin, especially Fon music which I have studied a bit. Check a style called zinli which uses a 2+3+3 pattern (repeated 3x) as its main structural rhythm.

Several nice moras in this piece as well to again create a hybrid of West African and Carnatic feelings, and the drum solo at the end is basically a solo over the skeletal structure of one of these moras.
