about

I am blessed to have had the opportunity to get Sri Trichy Sankaran to compose a piece for this group and this album. His idea was to take the chapu talas (a collection of unique talas in Carnatic music) and string them together as a mala (garland). Thus we have 3+5+7+9 (24), an intriguing structure that is outlined by the ankle bells for the duration of the piece, which is as follows:
X X . X . X X . X X . X . X . X . X . X . X X .
It opens with solkattu that reflects this structure:
Ta Tom . Ta . Ta Tom . Ta Ri . Ta . Tom . Ta Ka Di Ku Ta Din Gi Na Tom

The piece features Sankaran's characteristic compositional voice and contains pleasing rhythmic twists and turns. The last section of the piece features a koraippu, which is a systematic call/answer type of reduction between the rhythm section and the melodic instruments, crowned by a korvai. It uses the raga Kharaharapriya.
