about

The title of this track derives from the solkattu I used to compose the bass line. Melodically it uses a common pentatonic mode found among the Southern Ewe of Ghana, a place and people that love and know so well. Peppered throughout the tune are tasty rhythmic motifs (moras) from theCarnatic realm.

The bell pattern and general rhythmic underpinning is inspired by the music of tchingoume/gota which I have heard so much of when visiting Togo and Benin. I actually got to meet the innovator of tchingoume, Stan Tohon, on my first visit to Benin. True original. Tchingoume uses some unique bell patterns and is also signified by the use of gourds & calabashes as the main "drums". here I managed to use a giant gourd I obtained in Cotonou (Benin) years ago. Sub-woofer level bass!

A real hybrid of Carnatic and West African vibes.
